šŸ©ø Novak Djokovicā€”the best to ever do it

ā˜€ļø Good morning and welcome back to The Nosebleeds.

šŸŒŽļø Weā€™ll be recapping the biggest non-NFL stories in sports from the last week.

šŸ’„ Letā€™s start this Friday with a bang.

šŸŽ¾ Djokovic wins record-setting 24th major titleā€”Gauff her 1st

Last Sunday in New York, Novak Djokovic won his (male) record 24th grand slam title, defeating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets (6-3, 7-6 [5], 6-3). Not only is Djokovic still winning all of these tournamentsā€”he is dominating on his way to the titles. Djokovic won Ā¾ of this yearā€™s major championships, his only loss coming at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon. Literally no one can beat this guy when it matters except the young Spaniard. He is simply the GOAT of menā€™s tennis šŸ

On the womenā€™s side, 19-year old Coco Gauff took home her first major title by defeating Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. The crowd was strongly behind the young American teenager in the final, which turned out to be the match of the entire tournament (menā€™s draw included).

Looks like we might have the next Serena Williams on her hands.

šŸ€ Germany takes home the FIBA World Cup

Germany has won the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

The Germans defeated Serbia 83-77 in the final for their first ever FIBA World Cup title. Dennis Schroeder was the tournament MVP for the Germans.

But the game of the tournament actually turned out to be the bronze medal game between Canada and USA, a game in which Canada won by a score of 127-118. This was Canadaā€™s first ever medal finish at the World Cup, and more importantly, booked their ticket to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Dillon Brooks went off in the bronze medal game, scoring 39 points and going 7/8 from behind the arc. But Canadaā€™s Shae Gilgeous-Alexander was the star of the show, as he was arguably the best player at the entire tournament. Whenever Canada needed a big-time bucket, he was that dudeā€”as shown belowā€¦

Bet the Clippers wish they still had this guy instead of Paul George.

šŸ Canadaā€™s newest captains

In the first hockey news in forever, the Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets appointed their new captains.

Wearing the C for the Canucks will be stud defenseman Quinn Hughes, and for the Winnipeg Jets, center Adam Lowry.

For Vancouver, Quinn Hughes is an interesting choice. Hughes is obviously an unreal player, but he seems to be on the quieter side and you wonder if he can truly lead a NHL dressing room. This also makes you wonder if Elias Pettersson is on his way out of town, as he seemed like the natural choice if he was going to be in Vancouver long-term.

In Winnipeg, this is not a surprising decision from the Jets. Fine player, good guy, but do you really want a mediocre 3rd line center leading your hockey team (who might be a 4th liner on the leagueā€™s elite teams)? The correct decision would have been Josh Morrissey. Anytime the Jets needed that spark last season, Morrissey was the guy who stepped up. Maybe they donā€™t want to add more responsibility to Morrisseyā€™s plate as he logs some of the highest minutes in the leagueā€”but overall this is a mediocre decision by a team that seems content with permanent mediocrity,

šŸ¤” Basketball Trivia

The Americans finished off the podium in 4th place at this yearā€™s FIBA World Cup.

  • Question: when was the last time USA won the FIBA World Cup?

Answer at the bottom.

šŸ©ø Bloody Good Play of the Week

Some plays leave you speechless. This is one of those plays.

šŸæ Weekly Watchlist

Pretty quiet week ahead for sports outside of the NFL while we wait for hockey and basketball to start. But in the meantime, we have some quality MLB matchups and a full slate of college football on Saturday.

Here is what you should watch this week:

  • āš¾ļø TB Rays @ Baltimore Orioles: the two best teamā€™s in the AL battle it out for the AL East crown.

  • āš¾ļø LA Dodgers @ Seattle Mariners: a huge series for the Marinersā€™ playoff push that is filled with superstars such as Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Julio Rodriguez, etc.

  • šŸ‘Øā€šŸŽ“ šŸˆ Colorado State @ Colorado: I really should have Deion Sandersā€™ Colorado Buffaloes on this list every week, but Colorado Stateā€™s head coach made this matchup even spicier with these comments:

And Coach Prime respondedā€¦

Get your popcorn ready.

šŸ«” See yā€™all again on Tuesday for our Week 2 NFL Recap!

  • Trivia Answer: 2014. USA stomped Serbia in the final by a score of 129-90, and Kyrie Irving was named tournament MVP.
