🩸 Major (League) Movement
☀️ Good morning and welcome back to The Nosebleeds.
⚾️ The MLB Trade Deadline is 6PM EST tonight, and we have already seen some big names heading to new ball clubs.
🔔 There’s the bell. Here we go.
⏰ Deadline Day
By the time this reaches your inbox Tuesday Morning, there will be less than 12 hours until the trade deadline passes and the final push for the postseason begins. However, as of late Monday night, we have already seen a number of big name players on the move.
Three-time Cy Young winner and World Series Champion Max Scherzer has been traded to the Texas Rangers from the New York Mets. The Mets came into this season with championship aspirations as a result of their league high-payroll. But this season has been a disaster for American hedge fund manager Steve Cohen’s baseball team, and it now looks like they are entering a rebuild with this trade, and with ace Justin Verlander on the market as well. With the acquisition of Scherzer, the Rangers top three starters for the playoffs include Scherzer, Jacob deGrom, and Nathan Eovaldi. It doesn’t get much better than that (if everyone is healthy).
St. Louis Cardinals’ flamethrower Jordan Hicks was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays. Hicks throws absolute gas⛽️, and his addition will solidify Toronto’s bullpen as one of the best in the big leagues. Erik Swanson for the 7th inning, Jordan Hicks for the 8th, and Jordan Romano to close it out in the 9th… good luck scoring against the Jays if they have a late lead.
The Arizona Diamondbacks also shored up the back end of their bullpen with the addition of former Mariners closer Paul Sewald. Sewald has established himself as one of the best closers in baseball, evidenced through his strong basic and advanced stats.
There have been some other fairly significant trades so far, but I’d say as of now those are the quote-unquote "big three.”
Hopefully we will see more big moves before tonight’s deadline, and to stay up-to-date with the deadline and/or check out what other trades have been going down, I highly suggest checking out @JeffPassan on Twitter (you can’t make me call it X).
🏁 Max Verstappen wins 8th straight Grand Prix
You don’t even need to watch F1 anymore, odds are we can all guess the race winner.
The Belgian GP was dominated by none other than Max Verstappen, who claimed his eighth consecutive race victory—leaving him one victory away from the all-time record for consecutive wins (currently held by Sebastian Vettel).
We are witnessing an all-time dominant performance from the Dutchman. Not one team or driver, even the one with the same machine, can challenge him right now. While we should always appreciate greatness while it is in front of us, I sure hope F1 is more competitive next season and beyond.
🌏️ Women’s World Cup
The group stages of the Women’s World Cup will be completed by Thursday, and we have already seen some major upsets.
7th-ranked Canada has been eliminated in the World Cup group stages following an embarrassing 4-0 loss to the Australian hosts. Australia (ranked 10th by FIFA) and Nigeria (40th) are the teams advancing from Group B. The Canadians sure seem far removed from their Olympic gold medal win only two years ago.
In other news, the top-ranked Americans are in danger of potentially being eliminated in the group stages as well following a draw with the Dutch. The Americans only need a draw against Portugal to advance (which is extremely likely as theScore gives Portugal a mere 10% chance to win) but hey, you never know. It sure would be something if both of the North American teams, who have won almost all of the most recent major tournaments, failed to make the knockout round.
🤔 MLB Trivia
With the MLB Trade Deadline tonight, lets throw it back to some of the best deadline acquisitions of all-time.
Question: who was the last trade deadline acquisition to win World Series MVP?
Answer at the bottom.
📺️ Weekly Watchlist
⚾️ The best division in baseball, the AL East, has a couple major matchups going down this week.
The Orioles travel north to take on the Blue Jays in Toronto for a four game series. Baltimore took game one of the series on Monday night by a score of 4-2 in a game that featured many storylines, including Bo Bichette leaving the game with a right knee injury and some abysmal umpiring (as per usual).
The Yankees also welcome the Rays to the Bronx for a three game series this week. The Rays lit up the Yankees 5-1 in game one on the back of a great start from Cillian Murphy look-alike Tyler Glasnow (7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER) and four home runs in the first four innings.
⚽️ The Women’s World Cup group stages wrap up this week, and the knockout stages begin on Saturday with Switzerland vs. Spain and Japan vs. Norway.
😂 Just for Laughs
🫡 See y’all Friday!
Trivia Answer: Steve Pearce for the 2018 Boston Red Sox.
