🩸 July 14 Weekly News Recap

A recap of the biggest news and stories in the world of sports from the past week

Morning y’all 🤠

Happy Friday and welcome to another edition of Nosebleed Sports🩸

Today, we’ll be providing you with the biggest news and stories in the sports world in a concise and digestible way, so you can impress your friends with your breadth of sports knowledge 🧠

We’ll start with in-season sports news, and follow with the sports that are in their respective off-seasons.

Let’s have a day.

MLB⚾️

Vladdy Guerrero Jr. wins the Home-Run Derby💪

Like father, like son.

16 years after Vladimir Guerrero Sr. won the Home-Run Derby, Jr. came out and did the same thing.

Vladdy Jr. beat Mookie Betts, hometown favorite Julio Rodriguez, and Randy Arozarena to take the crown of Home-Run Derby champ, hitting 72 bombs (and killing a kid 😬) in the process.

Hopefully this will set Vladdy up for a big second half of the season (the derby win, not rearranging the poor kid’s brain).

NL wins their first All-Star Game since 2012⭐️

The National League defeated the American League 3-2 in the 2023 MLB ASG in Seattle.

Elias Diaz (I have legitimately never heard of this guy in my life) won MVP of the Mid-Summer Classic after taking Baltimore Orioles closer Felix Bautista deep for a two-run homer that gave the NL the lead in the 8th inning, which they held onto for the win.

Golf⛳️

Sepp Straka wins the John Deere Classic🚜

Sepp Straka posted a final round 62 to win last weekend’s John Deere Classic. Even though Straka won the tournament, in my eyes, he still choked.

Straka was on an absolute heater to start the day, firing a -7 28 on the front nine. He then birdied holes 11-14 getting him to -11, and only needed to go -1 on the last four holes to break 60.

Straka then proceeded to par hole 15, 16, and the easy par 5 17th, meaning he needed a birdie on the last to shoot 59.

And did he clutch up? He did not.

Straka decided to look like me on the course and snap hook is approach shot into the water, ultimately leading to him making a double bogey and shooting a 62.

Kudos to him for winning the tournament, but he had a chance to have an all-time great round of golf and he couldn’t get it done.

Cam Smith wins LIV Golf London💸

The Aussie Cam Smith won LIV Golf’s latest event in London and made bank.

Getting paid a cool $4 mil to play golf sure would be nice.

Seems like the defending Champion Golfer of the World is in good form to try and defend his title at The Open Championship next week.

F1🏎️

Max Verstappen wins British GP🐂

Verstappen was victorious at Silverstone, giving him his 6th consecutive race win. The guy is the best driver on the grid, in the best car on the grid, and is a lock to win the Drivers Championship yet again.

In one of the cooler moments of the season, Lando Norris (2nd) and Lewis Hamilton (3rd) also had podium finishes at their home grand prix.

With Oscar Piastri finishing in 4th place, it was a very solid weekend for McLaren as they seem to finally be trending in the right direction.

Danny Ric is back🦘

Nyck de Vries is out and Daniel Ricciardo is in for Alpha Tauri.

The F1 driver/Netflix star will be back racing for the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix.

For the sake of the next season of Drive to Survive being entertaining, I am happy Ricciardo is back racing. He is very entertaining and a lot more likeable than lots of the other drivers.

Must be pretty tough for de Vries, as he is out of a seat only 11 races into his first full season as a F1 driver. The dream is dead before he even had a chance to blink.

Tennis🎾

Djokovic (2) vs. Sinner (8), Alcaraz (1) vs. Medvedev (3) in Men’s Semifinals at Wimbledon⚡️

At the time you’re reading this, the Men’s Semifinals at Wimbledon will probably be underway.

We have two elite matchups, with maybe the greatest tennis player of all-time in Novak Djokovic taking on young up-and-comer Jannik Sinner in the first semifinal, followed by the electric Carlos Alcaraz taking on Daniil Medvedev in the second semifinal.

These four are all excellent players, but everyone wants one thing - a Djokovic vs. Alcaraz final. The legend against the 20-year-old superstar. The mistake-free tennis of Djokovic against the powerful, athletic, and creative tennis that Alcaraz plays. It would be a treat to have those two face off in the final.

For anyone looking to get into tennis, I highly suggest watching Alcaraz play. He is must-see TV. So, so, so fun to watch.

Here are the win probabilities for the two semifinals.

Jabeur (6), Vondrousova set to face off in Wimbledon Women’s Final🍓

I haven’t watched Vondrousova play this tournament, but I have watched Jabeur play in a few matches so far. From what I’ve seen, Jabeur has played really solid tennis and has stayed composed in the biggest moments. Jabeur was down a set and a break in her semifinal against Sabalenka yesterday, but then took over the match, coming back to win the second set 6-4, and took the third set 6-3 to punch her ticket to the final.

While Jabeur is definitely the favorite, we can’t sleep on Vondrousova. She is playing the best tennis of her career, and is doing some unprecedented things at Wimbledon.

Exhibit A:

We should be in for an excellent match!

NBA🏀

NBA announces new In-Season Tournament🍿

Here is a thread directly from the NBA explaining their NBA In-Season Tournament, the NBA Cup.

The NBA is probably the most progressive of the four major North American sports leagues, so them being the first ones to implement something like this is not surprising.

However, I do question how much value this really adds to the league. I think this dilutes the value of winning the actual championship, and may lead to less-inspired basketball being played in the playoffs.

NHL🏒

Alex DeBrincat traded to the Detroit Red Wings😺

After only one season as an Ottawa Senator, Alex DeBrincat has been traded to the Detroit Red Wings.

Here are the full details of the trade:

Following the trade, DeBrincat signed a 4-year, $7.9M AAV deal with the Wings.

Pretty tough for the Senators. Not only did they lose a good player, they lost him for significantly less than it took to acquire him in the 2022 offseason (2022 7th overall pick, 2022 2nd round pick, and a 2024 3rd rounder).

NFL🏈

Quarterback premieres on Netflix📺️

Earlier this week, Netflix released Quarterback, a football docuseries that follows three NFL quarterbacks (Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, and Marcus Mariota) and provides us with unprecedented access to their lives on and off the football field.

If you’re on the fence about giving it a watch, check out this trailer from the NFL itself.

🔥🔥🔥

I am currently only one episode in, but am super pumped to watch the rest of the series.

That’ll do it for our weekly news recap!
